String-trimmers are a very important piece of equipment for the professional landscape service provider. Often times they are used over 4-6 hours per day during the growing season, helping create a beautiful, well manicured lawn and landscape.
As great as the string trimmer is for the professional groundskeeper, it has a operational "dark side" as well. The string trimmer (aka Weed Wacker, weed eater, etc.) can cause irreversible damage to items and soft materials that are allowed to make direct contact with it's spinning line (as it cuts adjacent growing grass).
The following items or structures are commonly exposed to accidental string-trimmer related damage.
Wood Stairs, Fencing and Gates
Deck, Fence and Mail Box Posts
Tree Bark/Exposed Roots
Wooden or Plastic Children Playground Sets
Low-Voltage Light Fixtures
Exposed Utility Cables
Outdoor Furniture
Vinyl, Wood or Aluminum Siding
Air Conditioner Condensers
Low-Growing Annual and/or Perennial Foliage
Aluminum Downspout Extensions
Unless improved landscape design or protective strategies are employed (targeted wood mulch placement, expanded plant bed areas, use of sacrificial contact materials, simple grass removal, etc.), contact damage is very likely.
