If there is one weed that seems to appear in some of the strangest places (along with poison ivy) is common burdock, also known as wild rhubarb.
We see this big and bold, large-leaved biennial weed growing within deciduous hedge rows, along edges of lawns, sides of buildings and even under large evergreen trees. Anywhere the plant can avoid routine mowing or soil cultivation, but still receive modest sunlight exposure, the plant will flourish.
Common Burdock (also known as wild rhubarb): Burdock is a biennial plant (2 year life cycle) that reproduces by seed. Plant produces spiny cockleburs (seed heads) which cling to clothing, shoe laces and even animal fur for easy relocation. Plant has a large fleshy taproot and massive dark green colored leaves with a hairy textured leaf underside.
Remove common burdock by digging out plant when small or by applying a systemic herbicide directly to actively growing foliage (surrounding environment dependent) for best long term results.

2). Forever Improve the Soil (aerate, fertilize, top dress with organic materials, water routinely, avoid compaction, ensure proper drainage, etc.)
3). Plant Premium Site-Specific Grass Seed (the best seed blends will include 0% WEED SEEDS and 0% NOXIOUS WEED SEEDS)
4). Apply Selective Broadleaf and Grassy Weed Control Herbicides in a Targeted Manner (adjusted seasonally – as/if needed)
The overall health of your lawn (and soil) is critical to your long term weed control success. The healthier and denser the stand of turfgrass, the less open soil will exist for an opportunistic weed seed to grow.
Please contact Pacocha Landscaping Services, Inc. with any questions you may have or to schedule a meeting at your property to discuss any/all future lawn improvements needed.

When walking through shady areas, mainly on older, more mature landscapes, I occasionally notice a very special low-growing perennial that has a tendency to sneak it’s way around a plant bed, even spreading well into adjacent lawn areas.
The persistent perennial I speak of is called liriope (aka Monkey Grass, Lilyturf or Border Grass).
What makes liriope so special is even though it is very small in size, it is very difficult to completely remove and has a tendency to spread (variety dependent). Complete physical removal usually takes multiple tries, over several years. Even non-selective liquid herbicides like glyphosate may only be partially effective due to the plants tuberous root system.
IT IS VERY COMMON TO FIND LIRIOPE GROWING IN NEW LAWN AREAS THAT WERE ONCE PLANT BEDS!
The moral of my story is this, start removing liriope early. Begin digging out your unwanted liriope plants now to eventually reclaim precious planting bed space or to clear the way for a new lawn.

As of late, I have been having more and more conversations with both new and existing clients in regard to the possibility of surface damage caused by routine string-trimmer use at their properties. When mowing a lawn, it is often the case, that any grass found growing on-site, not accessible by a conventional lawn mower will be cut using a mechanical string-trimmer (aka weed-wacker, line trimmer, weed eater, etc).
Unless improved landscape design or protective strategies are employed (targeted wood mulch placement, expanded plant bed areas, use of sacrificial contact materials, simple grass removal, etc.), contact damage is very likely.
When placed/installed directly atop growing grass or are left in very close proximity to a regularly maintained lawn, the following items or structures are commonly exposed to accidental string-trimmer related damage.
Wood Stairs, Fencing and Gates
Deck, Fence and Mail Box Posts
Tree Bark/Exposed Roots
Wooden or Plastic Children Playground Sets
Low-Voltage Light Fixtures
Exposed Utility Cables
Vinyl, Wood or Aluminum Siding
Air Conditioner Condensers
Low-Growing Annual and/or Perennial Foliage
Aluminum Downspout Extensions

When clearing snow from difficult to access or “obstruction-rich” areas, there are only a few ways to get the job done. Of course, melting snow is fine when minimal accumulation occurs. Just apply salt or any other suitable ice melt material and wait for clear pavement to happen. But, when snow falls fast and accumulation is rapid, physical removal is the only way to gain control of the targeted area.
When snow blowers, plows, rotating brooms, etc. simply cannot fit or reach the area in need of service, a snow shovel becomes the only option available. A well built snow shovelPLUS the will and ability to use it, is the most important snow removal tool a contractor or self-performing property owner can have.
Please be sure to contact Pacocha Landscaping Services, Inc. with any snow, lawn or landscape management service request you may have. We look forward to hearing from you and stand ready to help anyway we can. Thank you for visiting our site and have a great day!
When applying bagged ice melt materials to sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, etc., it is very likely that at some point along the way, once a store bought plastic bag of salt is opened, you will have unused material leftover. Since bagged ice melt material is expensive, it is very prudent to do what you can to save the unused ice melt material in a manner so it can be used at a later date. Simply rolling closed the open plastic bag is a crapshoot at best. If the contents are allowed to become wet or even draw moisture from the air (hygroscopic materials – calcium chloride in particular), it will harden, clump and become nearly impossible to apply in an effective manner.
Beyond storing unused ice melt material at the end of a winter weather event, keep a few additional covered buckets pre-loaded and ready to go before the storm arrives. A bucket of salt is so much easier to handle than a clumsy, wet or sometimes snow covered plastic bag.

Has your air conditioner condenser shifted or become sunken over the years? Is soil, mulch and other debris now infiltrating the base of your condenser? Do you need to raise the soil level where your air conditioner condenser currently sits to improve on-site drainage? If any of these or similar issues pertain to you, please contact Pacocha Landscaping Services, Inc. to schedule an on-site property evaluation, we can help!
Pacocha Landscaping Services, Inc. will stabilize/elevate your existing condenser pad or replace it all together with a new and improved model. **Please Note: A qualified HVAC contractor will be needed to first disconnect your condenser’s electrical and coolant lines so we can improve the base pad area, then return later upon our completion to re-connect the unit (additional fees apply).**
Our on-site property evaluation will include the following:
Determine cause of original base pad failure (poor or nonexistent sub-base material previously used, negative drainage situation found, foundation settling occurred, old pad not structurally sound, etc.)
Assess surrounding landscape areas to determine best long term strategy for new condenser pad placement (away from mower and grass trimming equipment), adequate pad elevation (3″+/- above grade), determine any/all surrounding drainage improvements needed, etc.
Discuss new pad type and size, make note of who client will select to decommission the existing unit, timing of new pad installation and set date to have HVAC contractor return to reactivate applicable equipment.
Keep your air conditioning equipment in great condition and extend it’s lifespan by elevating it above soil grade and out of standing water prone areas. Please be sure to contact Pacocha landscaping Services, Inc. with any questions or service requests you may have. We are very happy to help any way we can. Thank you for visiting our site and have a great day!
We take our residential snow removal service very seriously!
We are asked many times over the course of a given month if we do residential snow removal. Our answer is, but of course we do! Not only do we perform residential snow removal, but we treat it with the same importance and level of care as we would any commercial site we are servicing.
Our residential snow removal service begins at 1″ of accumulation.
Our residential, commercial and industrial snow removal service routes are each capped at 6 hours in length (based on 4″+/- of snow accumulation). This limited route approach helps us return to your property to clear additional accumulated snow in a timely manner, even during the worst winter storm.
We clear snow from sidewalks, stairs and patios! Whether by shovel, broom or snow blower, we are willing and able to clear your non-plow vehicle accessible areas manually if needed.
Our existing seasonal lawn and landscape management clients have first choice when new snow route availability becomes available.
We offer per-occurrence and limited package pricing plans for our seasonally contracted residential snow removal services.
Winter service agreements extend from November 1st through April 1st. (unless specified/requested otherwise).
We offer the seasonal installation of fiberglass snow plow stakes (48″ long) to help prevent accidental plow contact with snow covered obstacles (retaining walls, landscape lighting, delicate plant materials, etc.)
We take great pride in our 25 plus years experience in the snow removal industry and are very fortunate to have served many great clients along the way, many of which we still proudly service today.
Please be sure to contact Pacocha Landscaping Services, Inc. with any snow removal question you may have. We would love to hear from you and look forward to being of service any way we can. Thank you for visiting our site and have a great day!
The goal of any snow removal service arrangement is to have snow-free pavement at your property whenever the need arises. Ideally, snow removal should be accomplished via an on-going approach, as snow accumulates, working with the storm until finished. In our local Chicagoland area, snow removal services can either be purchased individually (on-demand) or more commonly, by the season (contract agreement).
On-Demand Snow Plowing = A snow removal service in which no long-term agreement is necessary. Service is performed on very short notice and upon client request (only). Substantial time commitment is required by client to continue/manage such a service and results can be sporadic at best. Service pricing fluctuates (usually accumulation and/or resource availability dependent) and accidental property damage is likely due to less than desirable property awareness (ever changing/non-dedicated service providers, lack site specific snow removal/relocation knowledge, ignorant of past client special requests, unaware of snow covered obstacles, etc).
Contracted Seasonal Snow Management Service = A snow removal service that revolves around a formal written seasonal service agreement. A long term detailed arrangement that normally includes any/all services needed, all winter long and for a flat price (unless specified otherwise). Minimal client involvement is required after service begins. On-going performance continually improves based on site familiarity, use of specialized equipment and dedicated man-power assigned to the site.
Here are a few leading questions that may help you determine which snow removal service (on-demand or seasonal) is best for you?
1). Do you wish to personally manage any/all snow removal services performed at your property? ………. if yes, an On-Demand service may be perfect for you!
2). Do you wish to self-perform a portion of the needed snow removal services at your property? As an example, you would like to personally handle any/all snow removal services needed at your property that are less than 6″ of total accumulation. …….. if this limited service approach describes your situation well, an On-Demand service would best suit your needs.
3). Do you wish you lived in Florida and did not have to deal with snow? A Seasonal Snow Management Service is perfect for you!
4). Do you lead a busy life and snow removal is the last thing you want to think about? Find a reliable and positive snow removal company and never worry about snow removal again. A seasonal snow management arrangement was made for you!
Please be sure to contact Pacocha Landscaping Services, Inc. with any seasonal snow removal request you may have. We greatly appreciate the opportunity and thank you for visiting our site. Have a great day!
